Meant To Fly by Joséphine is the seventh song to be featured on my Blog as part of my mission to provide you with inspiration through songs that have been performed by musicians on Alive with Clive over the past couple of years.
Joséphine performed Meant To Fly during her interview on Alive with Clive on May 23, 2008.
As mentioned in her Bio on her My Space page, Joséphine left the romantic streets of Paris at the age of 17 to pursue her music in the bilingual city of Montreal, Canada. The couple of years she spent there were a stepping-stone for a transition from teenager to adult and from dreamer to artist. She was then ready to move to the city that she had always viewed as the music capital of the world: New York. There she co-wrote and recorded her first album, Unfinished Life, with singer/songwriter Craig Wilson. She has also been performing around New York in venues such as The Bitter End, Crash Mansion, and R&R.

In Meant To Fly, Joséphine discusses the dangers we literally must face when deciding to get on an airplane, but the song is actually about how flying on an airplane is a metaphor for living – specifically, that if we all remain in our comfort zones, play it safe, and “keep our two feet on the ground,” life becomes unworkable:
with no airplanes, the crowded highways would crack,
with no subways, New York would stop dead in its tracks,
if we all moved to the country, there’s no country left at all
So, in the song, she concludes:
maybe we were meant to fly,
don’t need wings to touch the sky,
maybe we should get our two feet off the ground,
get a little closer to the stars,
walk on planets near and far,
in other words, confront the voice in our head that is advocating caution, be bold and daring, take risks and explore the unknown!
